Where to stay at Skadar Lake: apartments and guesthouses in Virpazar

Accommodation at Skadar Lake is small-scale and family-run: apartments in village houses, a handful of guesthouses, a few rural estates in the hills. There are no resorts and no chain hotels inside the national park, which is exactly why staying here feels different from the coast.

We run boat tours, not accommodation – this is an honest overview of the options so you can choose your base, not a sales pitch for our own rooms.

Virpazar – the practical base

Virpazar is the lake's main village and the easiest place to stay. It sits where the Crmnica river meets the lake, wrapped around two old stone bridges, with cafés and konobas on the waterfront, an ATM, a bus stop and its own train station on the Bar–Belgrade line.

What you find here:

• Apartments in village houses – typically one or two bedrooms, a kitchen, often a terrace or a courtyard with vines.
• Small guesthouses and rooms – family-run, breakfast sometimes included.
• Rural houses in the surrounding hamlets – a few minutes' drive, more space, better views, a car essential.

Expect roughly €40–€80 a night for a simple double or apartment in season, less in spring and autumn. Book early for July and August: the village has limited beds and they fill quickly.

Other lake villages

Rijeka Crnojevića is beautiful – a river bend under an Ottoman-era arched bridge – but tiny, with very few beds and no public transport. Good for a quiet night, awkward as a base. We compare the two in Virpazar vs Rijeka Crnojevića.

Karuč and the remote hamlets offer a handful of rooms in genuinely isolated settings on unpaved roads – wonderful if that is what you want, impractical otherwise. See Karuč village.

Podgorica as an alternative

If you prefer a city, Podgorica is 35 minutes away and has the full range of hotels, plus the airport. The lake then becomes an easy half-day trip – see Podgorica to Skadar Lake. You lose the early-morning stillness on the water, which is the best part of staying at the lake itself.

What to look for when booking

• Air conditioning or good shade. Summer afternoons inland are hot – over 30 °C is normal in July and August.
• Parking. Village streets are narrow. If you drive, confirm a space. Our tour guests also get free private parking at the boats.
• Walking distance to the waterfront if you are here without a car.
• Mosquito screens – you are next to a wetland.
• Cash. Some small family places still prefer it; there is an ATM in Virpazar.

How long to stay

The best argument for sleeping at the lake is the first hour of daylight: glass-flat water, mist on the reeds, pelicans out fishing.
