The best time to visit Skadar Lake is May to June or September: warm water, comfortable air, active birdlife and far fewer people than the coast. The boat season runs from April to October, and each month on the lake looks genuinely different.

Spring: April to June

April wakes the lake up. Water levels are still high from the winter rains, the hills are green, and migrating birds pour through the wetlands. Air temperatures sit around 18–22 °C – ideal for boat trips, still cool for swimming.

May is one of the two finest months. Everything is in flower, birds are nesting, the light is soft, and the water begins to warm. By June the lake is fully into summer: air in the high twenties, water around 22–24 °C, the first white water lilies opening in the shallow northern bays, and still noticeably fewer visitors than July.

Summer: July and August

High season. Air temperatures inland regularly pass 30 °C and the lake becomes the best swimming pool in Montenegro – 25 to 27 °C at the surface, fresh, soft, no salt, no jellyfish, no sea urchins. The water-lily fields reach their peak, covering whole bays in white.

The trade-offs are heat and demand. Go out in the morning: the water is calmer, the light is better, the birds are active and the boats are cooler. Morning departures often sell out days ahead, so check availability early. Bring a hat, sunscreen and more water than you think you need.

Autumn: September and October

September is our favourite month. The crowds have gone home, the air settles back into the mid-twenties, and the water is still holding its summer warmth – often warmer than the Adriatic. Light turns golden, and autumn migration begins to fill the reed beds.

October is quiet and atmospheric: morning mist on the water, the hills turning colour, comfortable air around 18–20 °C and swimming only for the hardy. Bird numbers build again as wintering species arrive. It is the best month for photography.

Winter: November to March

The wet season. Skadar is one of the rainiest corners of Europe, and the lake can swell dramatically, flooding surrounding fields and doubling in area. Regular tours pause, and the lake belongs to the birds – tens of thousands of wintering waterfowl. Beautiful to look at from the shore, not the season for a boat trip.
