Skadar Lake boat tours from Virpazar: the complete 2026 guide

Skadar Lake is the largest lake in the Balkans, and Virpazar is its natural gateway: a small village at the end of a bay, 40 minutes from Podgorica and about an hour from Budva or Kotor. Everything below is what we tell our guests in person before they step on the boat.

Which tour should you pick?

• First time on the lake, limited time – take a shared 2-hour tour. You get the bay, the fortress views and a swim stop without planning your whole day around it.
• Photography, birdwatching, quiet – book a private wooden boat in the early morning. Pelicans and herons are active, the water is glassy and you have the skipper to yourself.
• Families and swimmers – a private boat with a swim stop is the easiest option: shade on board, your own schedule and no waiting for other groups.
• Waterfalls, remote villages, the far side of the lake – you need a fast boat. Distances on Skadar Lake are bigger than they look on a map.

Best time of year

The lake is beautiful all year, but June to September is the main season: warm water, reliable sunshine and every departure running. July and August are hottest – go out before 10:00 or after 16:00 for the best light and the least heat. May and October are quieter, greener and perfect for birdwatching, and winter tours run on request with dramatic, empty scenery.

What to bring

• Sun protection: hat, sunscreen, sunglasses. There is shade on board, but the reflection off the water is strong.
• Swimwear and a towel if your tour includes a swim stop.
• Water and a light snack – we also stop at lakeside spots where you can eat.
• Cash for national park tickets if they are not included in your tour.

Getting there and parking

Virpazar is signposted from the Podgorica–Bar highway, and the train stops at Virpazar station a few minutes' walk from the water. Our guests park for free at our private parking; see the free parking and arrival page for maps and walking directions.

All tours show live availability and can be booked online in a few clicks. Popular morning slots in July and August sell out days ahead, so book early if you have a fixed date.
