What and where to eat around Skadar Lake – carp, dried bleak, konobas in Virpazar and Rijeka Crnojevića, Vranac wine and prices to expect.

Eating at Skadar Lake means freshwater fish, home-made everything and wine from the hills behind the shore. There are no fine-dining rooms here – just family konobas with terraces over the water, which is exactly the right format.

What to eat

Carp (krap) is the lake's signature fish. It is baked whole with prunes and dried figs, roasted with potatoes under a lid, or grilled over wood. The version with prunes is a Crmnica speciality and much better than it sounds to a first-time visitor.

Bleak (ukljeva) is the small silver fish that built these villages. It is dried, smoked or fried whole and eaten with your fingers, usually as a starter with bread and cheese. Smoked bleak is the lake's most traditional taste.

Eel (jegulja) appears grilled or in a stew. Skadar sits on the eel migration route to the Atlantic, and it has been fished here for centuries.

Trout from the mountain rivers rounds out most fish menus.

Beyond fish: šopska salad, sheep's cheese, pršut (air-dried prosciutto from the karst villages), kačamak – a cornmeal and cheese dish from the highlands – grilled lamb, and bread from a wood oven.

What to drink

Vranac. The Crmnica valley behind Virpazar is one of Montenegro's oldest wine regions, and Vranac is its dark, full-bodied red. Krstač is the local white. Many family cellars, especially around the village of Godinje, pour straight from the barrel and will sell you a bottle for a few euros.

Finish with rakija – grape lozovača or, if the house makes it, quince or wild pear. Try the local pomegranate variant if it is offered.

Virpazar

Virpazar has the best concentration of places to eat on the lake: a row of konobas and restaurant terraces along the waterfront and around the stone bridges, plus cafés on the square. Fish is the reason to be here, and most kitchens buy it from the fishermen you can see moored outside.

It is also the practical choice – you can walk from the boats to lunch in two minutes. Our guests use our [free private parking](/free-parking-virpazar), so the car is not a problem. More about the village in the Virpazar guide.

Rijeka Crnojevića

The riverside terraces at Rijeka Crnojevića sit directly above the water with the old arched bridge in view – arguably the most beautiful lunch setting in the country. A short menu, well executed, heavy on carp and bleak. Come by car; there is no bus.

The wine villages

Godinje, a few minutes from Virpazar, is a cluster of old stone houses with vaulted cellars beneath them and vines trained over the lanes. Several families offer tastings with cheese, prosciutto and home-made bread. Crmnica more broadly is worth an afternoon if you like wine.

Murići and the southern shore

On the far shore below the Rumija mountains, Murići has a beach and a couple of simple summer restaurants serving grilled fish under the trees. Reached by a long winding road – or by boat.

Prices and practicalities

  • Main course: roughly €10–€18; whole fish is often priced by weight.
  • Local wine: €10–€20 a bottle in a restaurant, less from a cellar.
  • Coffee: €1–€2.
  • Cash is still welcome at small family places; there is an ATM in Virpazar.
  • Season: many places open April to October; winter hours are short.
  • Book ahead for dinner in July and August, or eat early.
  • Vegetarians: salads, cheese, kačamak, grilled vegetables and bean dishes – ask, and the kitchen will usually improvise well.

Eat after the boat

The natural rhythm here is a morning on the water and a long lunch afterwards. Every tour from Virpazar includes snacks and drinks on board, at least one swim stop, free parking and a digital guidebook in 25 languages. Browse the tours or check live availability.
