Boat on Skadar Lake with the Montenegrin mountains behind

The best things to do in Montenegro – Kotor, Skadar Lake boat tours, Lovćen, Durmitor, Ostrog, wine in Crmnica and more, with practical advice.

Montenegro packs a fjord-like bay, 290 km of Adriatic coast, five national parks, 2,500 m peaks and the largest lake in the Balkans into a country you can cross in three hours. Here is what is genuinely worth your time.

1. Walk the walls of Kotor

A UNESCO-listed old town of stone lanes and Venetian churches, with fortifications climbing 1,300 steps up the cliff behind it. Go at dawn or an hour before sunset – the light is better and the heat is bearable.

2. Take a boat tour on Skadar Lake

The best day on the water in Montenegro, and the one most visitors miss. From Virpazar, boats cross into reed channels and summer water-lily fields, past medieval monastery islands and the roofless prison fortress of Grmožur, out to hidden waterfalls, abandoned stone villages and the pelican grounds – with a swim stop in fresh water at 25 to 27 °C. Virpazar is 50 minutes from Kotor, 45 from Budva, 35 from Podgorica, and it has a train station. See the complete Skadar Lake guide.

3. Drive the Kotor serpentine to Lovćen

Twenty-five hairpins above the bay to the mountain that gave the country its name, ending at the Njegoš mausoleum above 1,600 m and a view over half of Montenegro.

4. Photograph the Pavlova Strana bend

A free roadside viewpoint above a near-perfect horseshoe in the Rijeka Crnojevića river. Best in late afternoon, or on a misty autumn morning. See Pavlova Strana.

5. Raft the Tara Canyon

One of the deepest canyons in the world, about 1,300 m, run in rafts through clear green water between June and September inside Durmitor National Park.

6. Hike in Durmitor

Glacial lakes, limestone peaks and the Black Lake loop as the easy option; Bobotov Kuk at 2,523 m as the hard one. June to September.

7. Visit Ostrog Monastery

A 17th-century monastery built directly into a vertical cliff, white against the grey rock – Montenegro's most important pilgrimage site, about an hour from Podgorica.

8. Wander Perast and the bay islets

A baroque village of stone palaces facing two islands mid-fjord, with a short boat hop out to Our Lady of the Rocks.

9. Swim in fresh water

The Adriatic is lovely but salty and busy. Skadar Lake in summer is warmer, softer and empty, with no jellyfish or sea urchins – and the best spots have no road access at all. See our swimming guide.

10. Watch pelicans and herons

Skadar Lake has recorded over 280 bird species and holds one of Europe's last Dalmatian pelican colonies. Early mornings, April–May and September–October are best; details in the birdwatching guide.

11. Taste Vranac in the Crmnica valley

The hills behind Virpazar are one of Montenegro's oldest wine regions. Family cellars in villages like Godinje pour dark Vranac straight from the barrel, with cheese, prosciutto and rakija to follow.

12. Eat lake fish in a konoba

Carp baked with prunes, smoked bleak, grilled eel, on a terrace over the water in Virpazar or Rijeka Crnojevića. See where to eat.

13. Explore Cetinje

The old royal capital: palaces, former embassies, monasteries and museums on a mountain plateau, 40 minutes from the coast.

14. Find Biogradska Gora's primeval forest

One of Europe's last three ancient forests, with 500-year-old trees around a glacial lake – and shade in August.

15. See Budva and Sveti Stefan

A walled old town, a lively beach scene, and the most photographed islet on the Adriatic coast just down the road.

Fitting it together

Base on the coast for the bay and the beaches, add one mountain day via Lovćen and Cetinje, and give Skadar Lake a morning or a full day – it is the easiest national park to reach and the only one you experience from the water. Our Montenegro itinerary puts these into 3, 5 and 7-day plans, and Montenegro's national parks covers the protected areas.

Do the lake properly

Every tour from Virpazar includes snacks and drinks, at least one swim stop, free parking and a digital guidebook in 25 languages. Browse the boat tours or check live availability.
