Driving times, buses, trains and costs for reaching Skadar Lake – and why Virpazar is the easiest arrival point, with free parking at our dock.
Skadar Lake lies about 40 km south of Podgorica and roughly 50 minutes inland from the Adriatic coast. Virpazar, our home village, is the one place on the lake you can reach by car, bus and train – which is why most visitors start their day on the water here.
Driving times to Virpazar
- From Podgorica: about 35 minutes, roughly 35 km on the main road south towards Bar.
- From Cetinje: about 30 minutes over the plateau.
- From Budva: about 45–50 minutes, roughly 45 km.
- From Kotor: about 50 minutes, roughly 55 km via Budva or Cetinje.
- From Podgorica Airport (TGD): about 30 minutes.
Times assume normal traffic. The mountain roads from the coast are spectacular but slow, so allow extra time in July and August.
By car – and where to park
Virpazar is signposted directly from the Podgorica–Bar highway, so you cannot really miss it. Roads are paved and in good condition throughout; only the old Kotor serpentine is narrow and slow, which is part of its charm.
Parking in the village fills up on summer mornings. Our guests use our own free private parking a short walk from the boats – maps and walking directions are on the free parking and arrival page. Car hire in Podgorica or at the airport typically costs €25–€35 a day.
By bus
Buses run from Podgorica to Virpazar roughly ten times a day. The journey takes 30 to 40 minutes and costs about €4–€5. Buses from the coast usually route through Podgorica or Cetinje. The stop is in the village itself, a few minutes on foot from the water.
By train
The Bar–Belgrade railway stops at Virpazar station, a short walk from the waterfront. Trains from Podgorica run every two to three hours, take about 30 minutes and cost around €2. It is the cheapest and one of the most scenic ways to reach the lake – the line runs high above the water before it drops into the village.
This is the single biggest practical advantage Virpazar has over the other lake villages: no transfer, no taxi, no rental car needed.

Arriving without a car
If you do not drive, Virpazar is the obvious choice. Take the train or bus from Podgorica, walk down to the water, and step onto the boat. Nothing else on the lake is that simple. Many of our guests do exactly this as a half-day trip from the capital or the coast.
Plan your day on the water
Once you are here, the lake does the rest: reed channels, water-lily fields, pelicans, waterfalls and abandoned villages, plus a swim stop on every tour. Compare the boat tours from Virpazar or check live availability for your dates. Morning departures in July and August sell out days ahead.
