Pavlova Strana: Montenegro's famous horseshoe viewpoint

Pavlova Strana is the viewpoint behind the picture: a horseshoe bend where the Rijeka Crnojevića river loops through a green gorge before opening into Skadar Lake. After the Bay of Kotor, it is the most photographed view in Montenegro – and it is free, roadside and takes five minutes.

What you are looking at

From a bend in the road high above the water you see the river curling around a wooded spur in an almost perfect horseshoe, with the karst hills stacking up behind and the lake glinting in the distance. The name means "Paul's side", after the slope itself.

The water is deep green in the morning and turns silver in the afternoon. Mist sits in the gorge on autumn mornings, which is when photographers come.

How to get there

The viewpoint sits on the road between Cetinje and Rijeka Crnojevića, roughly 20 minutes from Cetinje and about 5 minutes above the village. Coming from Virpazar it is about 25 to 30 minutes by car.

There is a small gravel pull-out at the bend with room for a few cars, plus a couple of stalls selling honey, rakija and figs in season. No ticket, no gate, no walk – the view is straight from the roadside barrier. A short path leads a little higher for a cleaner angle without the parked cars.

Drive carefully: it is a blind bend on a narrow mountain road, and people stop suddenly.

Best time to go

• Morning (8–11): soft light on the near slope, calm water, fewer people.
• Late afternoon: warm light across the gorge, the classic postcard look.
• October–November mornings: mist filling the bend – the most atmospheric conditions of the year.
• Midday in summer: harsh light and haze; go early or late if you can.

The viewpoint faces broadly north-east over the bend, so you are not shooting into the sun at either end of the day.

Combining it with your day

Pavlova Strana takes ten minutes, so it belongs inside a bigger day. Two easy combinations:

From the coast or Cetinje: the viewpoint, then down to Rijeka Crnojevića for lunch by the arched bridge, and on to Virpazar.

From Virpazar: a boat tour on the open lake in the morning – islands, lily fields, pelicans, swim stop – then drive up to Pavlova Strana for the late light. This is the version we recommend, because the viewpoint shows you the shape of the landscape and the boat puts you inside it.

One thing worth knowing

You cannot see this bend from a boat. The horseshoe only reads as a horseshoe from above; down on the water you are simply in a beautiful green river channel. Equally, the things you can only reach by boat – the monastery islands, the pelican grounds, the hidden waterfalls, the deep swim coves – are invisible from here. The two experiences are complements, not substitutes.
