Rijeka Crnojevića: guide to the river village on Skadar Lake

Rijeka Crnojevića is the prettiest village on Skadar Lake and the one most photographed from above. It sits in a deep green gorge on the river that shares its name, several kilometres upstream from the open water, gathered around a graceful arched stone bridge.

A village built on the river

The name means "the Crnojević river", after the dynasty that ruled this region in the 15th century from nearby Obod. For centuries this was a river port: goods from the coast came over the Cetinje plateau, were loaded onto boats here, and travelled down to the lake and on to Skadar. Fish went the other way – the bleak smokehouses here supplied half the country.

The traffic ended with modern roads, and the village emptied. What is left is quiet stone architecture: the old market buildings along the quay, the ruined smokehouse, terraced gardens, and the 19th-century Danilo Bridge, a single high arch that is the village's signature.

What to see and do

• The arched bridge, best in the late afternoon when the gorge fills with warm light and the river goes glassy.
• The riverside quay, with a handful of restaurant terraces directly over the water.

• A short river cruise through the meanders – sheltered, green and good for kingfishers and small herons.

Eating here

This is one of the best places on the lake to eat. Getting there

Rijeka Crnojevića lies at the end of a narrow, winding road down from the Cetinje plateau – about 25 minutes from Cetinje, 40 from Podgorica, an hour from Kotor or Budva. It is a dead end: you come here deliberately.

There is no bus and no train, and parking is limited to the roadside above the village, which fills quickly when coaches arrive. If you are travelling without a car, this village is difficult; Virpazar, by contrast, has both a bus stop and a station.

The famous viewpoint

The horseshoe bend photograph everyone knows is not taken in the village but from the [Pavlova Strana viewpoint](/blog/pavlova-strana-viewpoint) on the road above, a few minutes' drive up the hill. Go there first, then come down for lunch.

Boat tours: river or open lake?

Boat trips from Rijeka Crnojevića run down the sheltered river channel and reach the open lake only on longer routes.
