Budva to Skadar Lake is about 45 to 50 minutes by car, roughly 45 km. For anyone on a beach holiday it is the quickest way to swap crowded sand for empty fresh water, and the lake stays comfortably warm long after the Adriatic starts to cool.

Driving from Budva
The main road from Budva climbs to Cetinje, the old royal capital, then drops down towards the lake at Virpazar. It is a good, paved mountain road with one of the best views in the country as you crest the plateau. Alternatively you can follow the coast south and cut inland through the Sozina tunnel towards Virpazar – slightly longer, but less climbing.
In July and August the mountain road carries coaches, so allow extra time. Once in Virpazar, our guests use our free private parking instead of circling the village; maps are on the free parking and arrival page.
By bus
There is no direct service from Budva to the lake. Buses route through Podgorica or Cetinje, so the journey takes far longer than the drive. If you have no car, a private transfer or a coach excursion is the sensible option – or take the bus to Podgorica and the train onward to Virpazar, which is cheap and scenic.
Why leave the beach for a lake?
Because it is a completely different Montenegro. Fifteen minutes inland from the resorts, the water turns fresh and soft, the crowds vanish and the shoreline is national park. Skadar Lake is the largest in the Balkans, protected since 1983, and it holds more than 280 recorded bird species.

How to plan the day
Leave Budva mid-morning, stop briefly in Cetinje if you like museums and palaces, and be in Virpazar before noon. Take a two-hour boat tour with a swim stop, eat grilled lake fish in the village, and you are back on the coast for sunset. Want more water time? A longer tour reaches the waterfalls and the far shore, which the shorter routes do not.
