Virpazar vs Rijeka Crnojevića: which Skadar Lake village to choose

Boat tours on Skadar Lake leave from two villages: Virpazar and Rijeka Crnojevića. They offer genuinely different days out, and the right choice depends on what you want from the lake. Here is the comparison as we would give it to a friend.

The short answer

• Want open lake, swimming, islands, pelicans and waterfalls – and to arrive by bus or train? Start in Virpazar.
• Want a short, sheltered river cruise through a famously photogenic bend, and you are driving anyway? Rijeka Crnojevića is charming.

Access

Virpazar is the lake's gateway. It sits directly off the Podgorica–Bar road, has a bus stop, and – uniquely on the lake – its own train station on the Bar–Belgrade line. Podgorica is 35 minutes away, Budva 45, Kotor 50. You can get here without a car, which nobody can say about the other village.

Rijeka Crnojevića is reached by a narrow, winding road down from the Cetinje plateau, about 25 minutes from Cetinje. There is no bus and no train. It is a lovely drive and a dead end – you come specifically for the village.

Scenery: river versus lake

Rijeka Crnojevića is not really on the lake. It lies on a river several kilometres upstream, in a deep green gorge under an arched Ottoman-era bridge. Boat trips run down the meandering river channel, sheltered and pretty, and reach the open lake only on longer tours.

Virpazar opens straight onto the water. Within minutes you are in wide bays, and from there tours reach the reed channels and lily fields, the islands with their old monasteries and fortresses, the bird colonies, the hidden waterfalls and the quiet swim coves. This is where the lake feels big – because it is: 370 to 600 km², the largest in the Balkans.

Swimming

This matters more than people expect. From Virpazar, tours reach clean, deep, open water with proper swim stops – the surface hits 25 to 27 °C in July and August, fresh and soft, with no salt or jellyfish. Every one of our tours includes at least one swim stop.

Wildlife

Both stretches are rich – Skadar Lake has over 280 recorded bird species – but the big sights are on the open lake: the Dalmatian pelican colony, cormorant roosts, herons and egrets over the lily fields. The river gorge is excellent for kingfishers and small herons at close range.

Crowds and atmosphere

Rijeka Crnojevića is tiny and can feel full when two coaches arrive; it is also blissfully quiet outside those windows. Virpazar is busier – a working village with restaurants, wine cellars and a lively waterfront – but the lake is vast, and twenty minutes out you rarely see another boat.

Could you do both?
