Podgorica is the closest city to Skadar Lake, which makes it the simplest base for a quick visit. Virpazar is about 35 minutes away by car and roughly half an hour by train or bus – so the lake works comfortably as a half-day trip from the capital, with or without a rental car.

Driving from Podgorica
Take the main road south towards Bar through the Sozina area and follow the signs for Virpazar. The turn-off is clearly marked and the whole drive is on good, paved road – about 35 minutes door to door. Podgorica airport sits just south of the city, which shaves a few minutes off if you are arriving by air.

By train
The train is the cheapest option and one of the most beautiful short rides in Montenegro. Services on the Bar–Belgrade line stop at Virpazar, running every two to three hours and taking about 30 minutes from Podgorica. Tickets cost around €2, and the station is a short walk from the waterfront where the boats wait.
By bus
Buses run from Podgorica to Virpazar roughly ten times a day. The trip takes 30 to 40 minutes and costs about €4–€5. Buses and trains leave from stations right next to each other in Podgorica, so you can simply take whichever departs first. In July and August, arrive early or buy ahead to be sure of a seat.
Why Virpazar suits a trip from Podgorica
Virpazar is the lake's main gateway: train station, bus stop, cafés, an ATM, and boats leaving all day. From here tours head straight onto the open water – the wide bays, the lily fields, the pelican channels, the waterfalls and the quiet swim coves that give the lake its reputation. There is no transfer to arrange and no dead time.

Planning a day trip from Podgorica
Because the lake is so close, a half-day works easily. Head out in the morning, take a boat tour, and you are back in the city for a late lunch.
