Clear turquoise water in a quiet bay on Skadar Lake

Can you swim in Skadar Lake? Yes – 25 to 27 °C in summer, fresh and soft, no salt or jellyfish. Where to swim, when, and what to expect.

Yes, you can swim in Skadar Lake – and in summer it is the best swimming in Montenegro. The water reaches 25 to 27 °C at the surface in July and August, it is fresh and soft rather than salty, and there are no jellyfish and no sea urchins. Every one of our tours includes at least one swim stop.

Why the lake beats the sea

The coast is beautiful, but its beaches are pebbly, packed in August and full of salt. The lake offers the opposite: soft fresh water that leaves no residue, deep clean bays with no crowds, warmer temperatures than the Adriatic in spring and autumn, and a shoreline of mountains and reeds instead of sun loungers.

It is also safe and easy water to swim in – no tides, no currents worth the name, and no waves unless the wind gets up in the afternoon.

Water temperature month by month

  • April: 14–17 °C – too cool for most
  • May: 18–21 °C – brisk but swimmable
  • June: 22–24 °C – very pleasant
  • July: 25–27 °C – warm
  • August: 25–27 °C – warmest
  • September: 22–25 °C – still lovely, often warmer than the sea
  • October: 18–21 °C – for the brave

The shallow northern bays near Virpazar warm first and fastest. More seasonal detail in best time to visit.

Where to swim

From a boat, in the open bays. This is the real answer. Away from the reeds the water is deep, clear and cool below the surface, with rock shelves and small coves that have no road access at all. Our swim stops are chosen for clean, deep water – places you cannot walk to.

Murići beach, on the southern shore below the Rumija mountains, is the lake's best-known pebble beach, reached by a winding road and popular with local families in summer.

Around Virpazar itself the water is shallow, reedy and fed by the river – fine for wading, not the swim you came for. Ten minutes by boat changes everything.

What the water is like

Skadar is a large, shallow karst lake fed by the Morača river and by powerful underwater springs called sublacustrine sokovi or "eyes", some of which push cold water up from below the lake bed. Swim over one and you feel it – a sudden cool column in otherwise warm water. It is one of the odder pleasures of swimming here.

Visibility is good in the open water, more limited near the reed beds and the river mouths where the bottom is silty. The lily fields look inviting but are best admired from the boat: the stems are dense and tangling.

Practical tips

  • Swim in the morning. Calmer water, better light, cooler air on the boat.
  • Bring water shoes if you plan to get out on rocky shelves.
  • Sunscreen and a hat. There is no shade on open water and the reflection is strong.
  • Do not swim in the reeds – dense stems, silty bottom, and it disturbs nesting birds.
  • Watch the wind. Afternoon gusts can put up a real chop on the open lake.
  • Take a towel and a dry bag. We carry snacks and drinks on board.

Is it clean?

The lake is a national park and a Ramsar wetland, and the open water is clean and clear. Water quality is best away from settlements and river mouths – which is exactly where boat tours swim. Freshwater snails carry no risk to swimmers here, and there are no dangerous animals in the lake.

Swim where you cannot drive

The best swim spots on Skadar Lake have no road to them. Every tour from Virpazar includes snacks and drinks, at least one swim stop, free parking and a digital guidebook in 25 languages. Browse the tours or check live availability.
