Day trips from Kotor: the six best excursions in Montenegro

The best day trips from Kotor reach far beyond the bay. Within an hour or two you can be on the largest lake in the Balkans, at a mountaintop mausoleum, or inside a monastery carved into a cliff. Montenegro is small, so you never have to move hotels.

1. Skadar Lake – the standout nature trip

Skadar Lake is the finest nature day trip from Kotor, and closer than most people expect: about 55 km, roughly a 50-minute drive over the mountains via Cetinje. It has been a national park since 1983, holds more than 280 recorded bird species and shelters one of Europe's last Dalmatian pelican colonies.

The reason to come is the water itself. From Virpazar, boats head out across the bays into reed channels and lily fields, past abandoned villages and hidden waterfalls, with a swim stop in water that reaches 25 to 27 °C in summer. Leave the bay in the morning, spend two or three hours on the lake, and you are back by mid-afternoon – or stay for lake fish in the village and make a full day of it. The boat season runs April to October.

2. Lovćen and the Njegoš Mausoleum

Lovćen is the mountain that gives Montenegro its name, and its national park crowns the range directly above Kotor. At the summit stands the mausoleum of Petar II Petrović-Njegoš, the poet-prince who shaped the country, reached by a long staircase and rewarded with a view over half of Montenegro. About 40 minutes from Kotor.

3. Cetinje, the old royal capital

Cetinje is a low-key town of former embassies, palaces and museums on a mountain plateau, about 40 minutes from Kotor. It sits on the same road you take towards Skadar Lake, so the two pair naturally into one day.

4. Ostrog Monastery

Ostrog is the most dramatic building in Montenegro: a 17th-century Orthodox monastery built directly into a sheer cliff face, its white walls seeming to grow out of the rock. It is the country's most important pilgrimage site, about 1.5 hours from Kotor.

5. Budva Old Town

Budva is the coast's liveliest resort, with a walled old town of narrow lanes, churches and a small citadel, under half an hour south of Kotor. Beaches fan out either side, and the islet of Sveti Stefan is the most photographed view on the Adriatic coast.

6. Perast and the Bay of Kotor

You do not have to leave the bay at all. Perast is a tiny baroque town of stone palaces facing two islets in the middle of the fjord, a short drive around the water. A small boat runs out to Our Lady of the Rocks.
